Re-read this for my reading group. I had forgotten how riveting it is, and especially poignant after the focus on the 100 years anniversary of the armistice in 2018 has renewed and enlarged our knowledge of the time.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Really glad that I re-read this for a reading group. Not an easy read, the style is quite dense, but worth it to learn so much about the war that shaped 20th century Europe. Registering to send as a RABCK.
Thank you so much for this wishlist book :)
So I just wrote a review and then Bookcrossing went down when I hit save and I lost it all! Time for a rewrite!
I have mixed feelings about this book. At times it drove me to tears and at other times, it bored me to tears.
It was fascinating following Vera during the War years. It was also heartbreaking. I was reading this book during my lunch hour and had to put it down at points to save myself from bursting into tears and embarrassing myself. I don't know how you cope with so much grief.
I struggled with the bits before and after the war. The subjects covered in these sections are important, equal right for women and peace but it wasn't told it a way I found interesting. These parts really dragged and I had to force myself to read it just to finish the book.
Overall, I'm glad I read this but I wouldn't read it again.

I read this book several years ago for an Open University course and it gave real depth and insightful reading concerning the First World War.
