Why this title ? It comes from Basho, a Japanese poet. Oku no Hosomichi. The text is written in the form of a prose and verse travel diary and was penned as Bashō made an epic and dangerous journey on foot through the Edo Japan of the late 17th century. (Matsuo Basho)

In the despair of a Japanese POW (prisoners of war) camp on the Burma Death Railway, surgeon Dorrigo Evans in haunted by his love affair with his uncle's Young wife two years earlier.
Struggling to save the men Under his command from tropical diseases and starvation, from beatings, he receives a letter that will change his life forever.

This is a story about the many form of love and death, of war and Truth, as one man comes of age, prospers, only to discover all that he has lost.
It's dramatic, full of cholera, beatings, but I like this book.

That's a Moving story. Not only a novel about love, loss and heart. WW II haunts it. Australian POWs beaten, exhausted on the Railway Death Line in Burma, under Japanese rule. The worst side of Japan (Showa-era expansion, Japan's Special Unit using prisoners as guinea pigs).
Dorrigo Evans during WWII and after… One of the most dramatic peace time moments of the book, see pp. 412-415. "She was drawing nearer. He tried to slow his step…"

Burma - Australia - Japan. A novel set in 3 countries and 2 continents.

Picked it up at the International Bookcrossing Convention in Mainz - it was one of the left-overs from the huge book buffet. Took it with me to Berlin, maybe I'll pass it on at a bookswap meet-up.
(Read it a few years ago - brilliant!)
