Came across this volume in a book swap shelf in a Newport, Rhode Island hotel. Hoping that it will be entertaining in the way that Julie and Julia and other blog-based comic memoirs have been. Welcome to Bookcrossing: feel free to keep this book, and return to the site to share what you thought of it. Then, pass along the book and see where it goes in its travels, or keep for your permanent collection. It's all up to you and Bookcrossing is just a way to keep discovering new books and participating in a world-wide discussion about books.

This was a lot of fun. Hancock has a breezy, engaging style and I zipped through this in a couple of days. It was a rollicking adventure, I guess. Ultimately, it was about her battle with anxiety and her very social year of trying to get back to being the confident and carefree person she had been in her teens and 20's, before she started worrying about all the bad things that can happen to you.

It's a neat way of engaging with someone else's experience and explicitly try to learn from their achievements. In this case, it was Eleanor Roosevelt, who was really a very unlikely political leader, if you think about it. Hancock shares some highlights of Eleanor's life in a very accessible, readable way. As she is doing so, she makes a bit of a case for exploring museums and historic houses as a way of broadening your own experience without going too far. She ends up during the year of this book evaluating what her relationship with her boyfriend means to her, and the many uncertainties of knowing whether you have just settled (out of fear) or whether you are really ready to commit to a relationship.

This is a fun light read - when you need a break from a stressful time in your life, or when you want entertainment on the beach or an airplane, or just when you want a great chat with a thoughtful and fun girlfriend. (That said, it's not a girly-girl book only for women: I think both men and women could enjoy getting inside her head.)
