Winner of the National Book Award for Fiction.

To call Going After Cacciato a novel about war is like calling Moby Dick a novel about whales." So wrote The New York Times of Tim O'Brein's now classic novel of Vietnam. Winner of the 1979 National Book Award, Going After Cacciato captures the peculiar blend of horror and hallucinatory comedy that marked this the strangest of wars. Reality and fantasy merge in this fictional account of one private's sudden discussion to lay down his rifle and begin a quixotic journey from the of Indochina to the streets of Paris. Will Cacciato make it all the way? Or will he be yet another casualty of a conflict that seems to have no end? In its memorable evocation of men both fleeing and meeting the demands of the battle, Going After Cacciato stands as much more than just a great war novel. Ultimately it's about the forces of fear and heroism that do battle in the hearts of us all.

Read this a few months back but didn't register it at that stage.

It's difficult to do this brilliant book justice in only a few words. A squad of soldiers on patrol in the Vietnam paddy fields; a sweet, young, dumb soldier who packs up, heads west across the mountains and jungle to hike the 8,600 miles to Paris and peace; the fellow soldiers who go after crazy Cacciato to bring him back and end up following him all the way to Paris. Or do they?

This was one of my best reads for 2018. My word, this man can write. I already knew that, having read The Things They Carried, so probably shouldn't have left it so long to read this one. It is a surprising read; "the melding of the quest for Cacciato with the day-to-day awfulness of the war elevates this far above a normal war story".

Just read it.

Using the lockdown that we're currently experiencing to catch up on some reading :)

This one wasn't really my cup of tea. I didn't dislike it, but think hubby enjoyed it more than I did.
