On a peaceful exploration mission, Cordelia's camp is blown to bits by the warlike Barrayaran people. There is treachery within the Barrayaran group and Cordelia finds herself alone on the planet with their leader, Vorkosigan, known for butchering his prisoners. As she gets to know more of Barrayaran culture, she ends up on the other side in war, and more and more layers of intrigue are uncovered. This is brilliant space-opera, I will definitely be reading more of the series.
