My wife's rating. This is a novel we found in our Little Free Library. It tells the story of two black women from the same small town in Ohio who grow to live contrasting lives.

This was my first Toni Morrison book. I've always assumed that she was a writer who was not really for me, but the premise of this novel intrigued me and so I decided to give it a try. It basically confirmed that Morrison is not an author for me. She does write extremely well, but the themes are heavy and dark: poverty, violence, racism, promiscuity, etc. Having said that, there were some amazing sentences in this book that I read more than once because they captured so succinctly and well some truth about human nature. I probably won't pick up any more Morrison, but there were some bright spots in this one.
