I got this hardcover from an online seller. It's set at a stately home with extensive grounds, where young Jim now lives with his father after the death of his mother. While his father works as estate gardener, Jim finds himself inhibited by all the restrictions - he wants to explore everywhere, but so many places are off limits... When he meets a strange boy who seems to want to remain hidden, he's tempted into defying the restrictions - but the whole place seems to be under camera surveillance, making it hard for him to get away with it. And if he's caught again it could jeopardize his father's job. What's a kid to do?

While some of the setup seems quite unlikely, the atmosphere - especially once the ghostly children start appearing and Jim begins to realize what may be at stake here - is nicely chilling. Old tales and beliefs, mismanagement of the land and water, and some dreadful secrets conspire to make an enjoyably haunted story. (I admit I missed one of the major plot twists entirely, and was both appalled and delighted when it came to light!)

I left this book in the Little Free Library on this chilly day; hope someone enjoys it!
