Blurb:
Toru Okada's cat has disappeared and this has unsettled his wife, who is herself growing more distant every day. Then there are the increasingly explicit telephone calls he has started receiving. As this compelling story unfolds, the tidy suburban realities of Okada's vague and blameless life - spent cooking, reading, listening to jazz and opera and drinking beer at the kitchen table - are turned inside out, and he embarks on a bizarre journey, guided (however obscurely) by a succession of characters, each with a tale to tell.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Given to grovalskii when we met at a coffee bar (but neither of us had coffee).
One of my favourites by Murakami. I love his bizarre, magical realism novels. I must have read it in 2005 or so.

This is my third book by Murakami. I would not have read it had it not been for ApoloniaX's encouragement. :) And in fact, this was the best of his books that I've read so far. Had this been my first one, I might have been more enthusiastic about this author. :D So having said that, I really enjoyed this book. It was a bit weird, but not too much so. Just the right combination of realism and phantasy. I have to admit that it was a bit on the long side. Some of those side stories could probably have been left off and thus made the book a bit shorter and more readable, but all together it was a good book. After his, I may actually look out for another book by this author - though maybe not right away.
