I got this hardcover from the charity-sale bin at Hannaford's. It's a look at the many variations of gender identity, with the author revealing some of her own misconceptions and unease as she gets to know the different scenes - and the very different individuals - whose lives have been affected by these things.

One essay focuses on female-to-male transsexuals (with some interesting discussion of just what it means to feel male or female, as distinct from biology, sexual preference, or preferred modes of dress and public presentation), another on heterosexual crossdressers (this one seemed the most depressing, not because of the crossdressers themselves but because so many of them had spouses who were apparently giving support only grudgingly and were not enjoying the events at all), and a third on hermaphrodites and the changing attitudes towards early medical intervention (with references to the harrowing case of David Reimer, documented in As Nature Made Him).
