Our country's long and difficult road through history is star-studded with splendid people. They set us a shining example in good times as well as in bad, in every kind of weather, as it were. They shine, and their light is never dimmed. It is about these people that the well-known Soviet prose writer, Vadim Kozhevnikov, has written many books. (...) The present volume contains fourteen of the writer's best stories.
If those are 14 of his best stories, I'm not quite eager to read the other stories. While some of the once every-day-heroes were interesting (or how they were presented), the story-telling was a lot less so. Unfortunately, I had to push myself to finish many of the stories. Part of it may be caused by the translation or by my unextensive knowledge of Russia at that time, but I Believe a lot is due to the pace and style.
