Madison Square Tragedy

I've enjoyed many of Geary's true-crime-in-graphic-novel-format books, and was glad to find this ex-library hardcover at Better World Books. This book covers the scandalous murder of high-living architect Stanford White in the roof-garden of Madison Square Garden in 1906. The killer was the not-very-sane Harry Thaw, scion of a wealthy industrial family, who had married Evelyn Nesbit, lovely showgirl, artists' model - and former lover of Stanford White. (White's seduction methods of a not-yet-16-year-old were far from sympathetic, but Thaw was a sadistic maniac; poor Evelyn really went from the frying pan to the fire.) The book covers the backgrounds of each of the three principal characters, follows the story through the murder and the trial, and then shows the fates of the survivors - which included some small quantity of justice, though the way Thaw's wealth helped him out of a hospital or a prison still rankles. An intriguing look at turn-of-the-century New York.
I'm putting this book in the Manga and Graphic Novel bookbox (bookbox journal here). Hope someone enjoys it!

this was an interesting read as it was one of the most famous murders of its day but is probably largely forgotten today. i enjoyed the retro artwork, which fit the time period of the story, and it's surprising how little has changed in a hundred years when you compare this story of the young ingenue who was taken advantage of by men and ended up with an abusive husband and the stories that have come out of the me too movement. i didn't find much that i could personally relate to, but this was an interesting look at a moment from the not-too-distant past. thanks for sharing!

One of the starting books for the Victorian Era+ Bookbox Ray!

This came in the Victorian bookbox ray, and I'm really excited to read it, since I liked an earlier one he did on the Borden case.
I'd like to read the whole series.
I'd like to read the whole series.
Thaw-White is a pretty well known case, actually, to true crimers.
I appreciate the take, though, that Evelyn Nesbit, rather than being a femme fatale who led these men into disaster, was a victim herself, having been exploited from an early age. When Mr. Nesbit died, there wasn't much of a social safety net for widows and orphans and employment options were limited for women.
For the New Victorian bookbox.

This came back to me in the Victorian bookbox. Since I like these so much, and they're hard to find, I'm going to keep it.
