I got this softcover from an online seller. It's from a graphic-novel series about a federal agent who's a "ciopath" - he can get psychic impressions from the things he eats, making him an interesting (and sometimes gruesome) variation of a crime-scene tech. The tone's mostly dark-humor with lots of action, but the relationships between the many characters add some depth (when they aren't also adding humor). The authors also seem fond of asynchronous storytelling; one tale opens with the final panel and then does an obvious how-we-got-here, while another opens with "the pages got shuffled out of sequence in this issue" - to do pretty much the same thing, while blaming it on the layout people {wry grin}.

This volume has stories that stand alone pretty well, though everything's part of the overall story-arc, with hints here and there as to what's to come. Oh, and did I mention that it's gruesome? Aside from some of the things Tony eats in the course of his investigations, there's a "not exactly conventional first date" that ends with Tony's girlfriend Amelia spattered with blood from a life-saving headshot to the foe threatening her life. (Amelia is a "saboscrivener", with the power to write about food such that the readers can actually taste it. Yeah, there are a lot of different food-related superpowers in this story!)

The cases here include a group of gourmands who focus on the most rare and exotic foods, regardless of legality; a gang involved in a cockfighting ring (this has extra weight due to the whole poultry-ban thing - and it features the awesome and deadly Poyo the rooster; and a story that mixes scenes of the dangerous Big Bad, a glitch in Tony and Amelia's relationship, and a really charming and funny family dinner at Tony's family home.

There are nods to events from previous episodes too, including Tony's artificial ear (to replace one bitten off by the Big Bad in an earlier confrontation), the reason behind the fact that Tony's partner Colby is a cyborg, the fact that in this universe all poultry are banned (the reasons for THAT are... interesting), and more.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series with some entertaining tidbits. And some spoilers, mostly masked but if you don't want ANY hints about what's to come, skip that until you've finished the series.]

It's not, you are what you eat,

but what sordid life
that food lived before you.
