I got this hardcover at a local Salvation Army thrift shop for another release copy. I read the book long ago, after seeing the riveting 1964 film, and the strength of the film's performances overshadowed the book for me. Not sure what I would have felt about it if I'd read it first, but this may be one of those cases where the film takes the story to a higher level; I know I felt the characters' emotions more powerfully by seeing them conveyed on the actors' faces than I did when reading about them.
