A good old fashioned, traditional style ghost story where the atmosphere & the insights into the narrators state of mind create the terror. The setting, however, is far from the traditional, not a haunted house in sight here! Instead this is set in the dramatic arctic wastelands & the desolation & cruelty of this dangerous but very beautiful landscape is convincingly brought to life.

The author manages to convey the day-to-day drudgery & general problems of life in this harsh environment in a way that somehow keeps the repetitive daily routine from becoming a monotonous read, managing to keep the reader slightly on edge, wondering if/when/what will occur.

On its way as a Surprise RABCK to someone who likes a ghost story.
