< "I write this sitting in the kitchen sink. That is, my feet are in it; the rest of me is on the draining-board, which I have padded with our dog's blanket and the tea-cosy".
This is the diary of Cassandra Mortmain, which tells of her extraordinary family and their crumbling castle home. Cassandra's father was once a famous writer, but now he mainly reads detective novels while his family slide into genteel poverty. Her sister Rose is bored and beautiful, and desperate to marry riches. Their step-mother Topaz has habit of striding through the countryside wearing only her wellington boots. But all their lives will be soon be transformed by the arrival of new neighbours from America, and Cassandra finds herself falling in love... >

Unfortunately I don't have as much spare time for reading as I'd like during last few weeks.
I started this as a light entertainment and at first it was kind of a fun read. I mostly liked the "voice" of the narrator while the eccentric characters kept my interest up to a point, although I could see some developements of the plot coming from miles away. Some far-fetched and silly incidents were enjoyable and I liked the many literary references too.
But after a while I felt that the pace of the story got too slow, not much was happening and all the melodrama got on my nerves. This book is a bit surreal and unbelievable and predictable too, but mostly a pleasant read. That said, I think it could have been much shorter.
I'm not much -or at all- into the romance tropes and I felt that after the original vibrancy and wit of the story started to die out, there wasn't much steam to keep this running. I was kind of bored towards the end.
6 ½/10
