" A handful of grain is found in the pocket of a murdered businessman...
Rex Fortescue, king of a financial empire, was sipping tea in his counting house' when he suffered an agonising and sudden death. On later inspection, the pockets of the deceased were found to contain traces of cereals.
Yet, it was the incident in the parlour which confirmed Jane Marple's suspicion that here she was looking at a case of crime by rhyme. "

Agatha Christie never fails to offer some light entertainment among more "heavy" readings. To be honest most of her stories are too far-fetched and/or "naive" on some aspects, there are the usual prejudices of the era, the characterisation is a bit superficial, but the mystery part is usually interesting while most stories are decently paced and intrigueing.
This one was an enjoyable book to pass the time, although not among her best.

The box of books and release supplies and other goodies arrived safely today. Thanks so much! This is the book that inspired one of my favorite entries in the 1985 mini-series which starred Joan Hickson as Miss Marple, and I look forward to reading the book!

Later: I was pleased to find that the TV adaptation I liked so much was very faithful to the novel - and that the novel itself was quite fun, with its twisty plot and many red herrings and a surprisingly capable police detective. Oh, and Miss Marple, of course - though she doesn't appear until halfway through the book! When she does arrive, she and Inspector Neele develop some mutual respect, with Neele evincing a keen knack for persuading witnesses and/or suspects to say more than they may have meant to. (He doesn't succeed with everyone, something he realizes himself, and for which he appreciates Miss Marple's insights even more.)

So much of the scene-setting and the casual dialogue struck me as sublimely well-crafted; I think Christie sometimes gets taken for granted due to her best-known characters and twisty plots, but as a stylist she was pretty darned good!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the book, with some entertaining tidbits.]
