Picked up at the Old Gang pre-Christmas meetup. This is right up my street. Have read one of the Mordecai Tremaine mysteries before. Looking forward to renewing my acquaintance.

Thanks

Murder has a Motive by Francis Duncan - Good

Mordecai Tremaine is an unassuming little man. A retired tobacconist with an interest in murder. He heads off to the village of Dalmering for a break visiting friends but, of course, he arrives just as a murder has been committed - one of the village amateur dramatic society is found dead just as they are about to put on a production.

By coincidence the Scotland Yard man assigned to the case, Inspector Boyce, is a friend of Tremaine's from a previous case he helped with, so he is more than happy to leave Mordecai 'under cover' to listen in to local gossip and, of course, solve the case.

Written in 1947, it is golden age/cosy crime. A nice gentle read.

I did enjoy this book. Just the right balance of mystery and twists without being over complicated. A good range of characters too, who weren't just 2 dimensional cutouts. I like how you weren't quite sure who was to be trusted all the way through. Thanks for passing this one on to me. I meant to say, although this author has written other books with this detective I read this as a stand alone novel and it didn't matter.

Thank you very much for this morning's parcel, Plum-crazy. I love getting books through the post, especially when my stock of books to be read is getting low, as it is at the moment, and even more especially when they're nearly all books I haven't already read. Brilliant, thank you!

I see that this mystery is described as Vintage, first published in 1947, and comes to me with a BookCrossing history, two very good reasons for reading it sooner rather than later!

Thank you again, lass. It's all much appreciated, the books, the Christmas card and the present to go under the tree. Wonderful! I love Christmas!!!

I love reading murder mysteries from the 1940s (and thereabouts!) with their lack of modern forensic techniques and the threat of the hangman facing the culprit . . . super stuff, well written, engrossing!
