Once upon a time, I lived in the urban "oasis" of Brookwood Hills. So when I saw this book on sale, I had to have it.

From Amazon where readers gave this book high marks:
When Benjamin Franklin Burdett and his son Arthur developed their streetcar suburb of Brookwood Hills in 1922, they chose land on the cusp of change, straddling the city and county line. The area, once populated by Native Americans, was the site of the opening shots of the bloody Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 20, 1864. Affluent homeowners in the early 20th century made this stretch of Peachtree Street, named “Brookwood” after society doyenne Emma Thompson’s country mansion, one of Atlanta’s most elegant neighborhoods. Today, Brookwood Hills, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is a leafy enclave of 350 homes within the city of Atlanta. Visitors call it an urban oasis; to city planners, it is a premier example of traditional neighborhood design. To the generations of families who have grown up in its homes, played at its park and pool, joined its clubs, and fought its battles, Brookwood Hills is something much more―it is their hometown.

I really enjoyed this and learned things I did not know about Brookwood Hills, one of Atlanta's loveliest neighborhoods. I visited again this past weekend. My time there in the late 1980s was one of the most traumatic of my life so venturing back is always a challenge. Even after enjoying this book, I am not tempted to return. Though the neighborhood is still lovely and many wonderful people live there, the encroaching city is getting uglier and uglier. As so much of Atlanta's tree canopy is disappearing, I was glad to read of all of the measures taking place in the community to preserve Brookwood Hills' urban forest and tree-lined streets. Brookwood Hills trivia: Popular authors Pat Conroy and Kathryn Stockhert lived there as did the great choral master Robert Shaw, who led the Atlanta Symphony for many years (Pages 110-111.) I don't really watch TV or go to the movies much but I learned that a popular actor was raised in Brookwood Hills. Ed Helms starred in the TV series THE OFFICE and in the film THE HANGOVER (See page 101). Ultimately, Brookwood Hills is not my home, remembering how I was cheated there in a personal way still makes me feel sad. So I'll pass this along in BookCrossing. I know someone will enjoy it and probably pass it back to Atlanta.

The book label features my photo of Georgia artist Steffen Thomas' TRILON, which is at an intersection of Peachtree and 15th Streets at the High Museum and Colony Square and just up the road from Brookwood Hills. A native of Fürth, Germany, Thomas was of Welch and German ancestry. He first made his home here in Georgia back in the 1930s and married Sara Douglass, a Southern lady from a prominent Atlanta family, in 1933. Sara became his lifelong muse. They raised four children in Stone Mountain, Georgia, near his studio. Trilon honors the Southern Woman.

What a nice surprise! I love history, and the photos in this book look very interesting. Brookwood Hills seems like a community that encourages pedestrians, so maybe that will inspire me to visit next time I'm at my daughter's place near Athens.
