from the back cover:
On the last night of 1937, twenty-five-year-old Katey Kontent is in a second-rate Greenwich Village jazz bar when Tinker Grey, a handsome banker, happens to sit at the neighboring table. This chance encounter and its startling consequences propel her on a yearlong journey toward the upper echelons of New York society - where she will have little to rely upon other than a bracing wit and her own brand of cool nerve.
A fascinating read. Rich, with great story-telling.

Received today. Thank you, waterfalling!
A bit of a mixed bag for me. First, the good. I really enjoyed the writing style and found the prose both lively and easy to read. The setting, New York in 1938, was fascinating and really came to life. The storyline was perhaps a bit disjointed, and I found that I didn't always understand the characters' motivations. I think it is tricky for a male author to convincingly write a female first person narrator, so Katey did not quite ring true for me. Overall, I would describe this as a good book but perhaps not a great one. Towles has written another novel that has received acclaim, A Gentleman in Moscow, and I would be interested in also giving that one a try at some point since I did enjoy his writing.

This was an engrossing and enjoyable read. Working class young women meet a well-to-do young man in New York City, where dreams can come true, but fairy tales are still merely fantasy.
