'Hurrah to British Library Crime Classics for rediscovering some of the forgotten gems of the Golden Age of British crime writing. This extremely clever country-house murder mystery by Mavis Doriel Hay is the perfect holiday gift for the avid cozy-crime fan. It has an aristocratic setting, a dead earl, and a major suspect. The man who could have done it is Santa Klaus but what motive could he have for putting a bullet in Sir Osmond Melbury's noggin? There are loads of clues, red herrings, and twists in a truly classic Christmas mystery with all the Golden Age patina.' --Globe and Mail

Many thanks for this Christmassy surprise that popped through the letterbox today. I've read a couple in this series (they might have both come courtesy of you too!) & they are perfect Xmas reading. The chocs are very much appreciated too *yum*
Have a very Happy Christmas!

I usually enjoy these blasts from the past but this one not so much.

In short, I found it confusing. The discussions about which doors & rooms people went in & out of got a little tedious (it was like listening someone recount a game of "Cluedo" they'd once played!) .... plus it was all gone over yet again if it turned out someone had lied (which they frequently did!) I constantly confused Jennifer & Carol which didn't help either :o)

Not a bad read but I found it too muddling to class it as a good one. Sorry that I can't give it a more glowing review Anne-Elliott. It was still appreciated though & is now reserved for the "Christmas in July" Challenge.

This is one of the books I brought home from Leeds when a few local BookCrossers got together over lunch. Great fun, good to see you all!
I chose this one because I like the odd mystery, especially if they're not too gruesome. Fingers crossed!

Slow and steady. I do enjoy these classic crime mysteries from the '30s.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Left on the shelves in the porch with the other fundraising books. Please be prepared to donate 50 pence or more to their current charity, Open Country, helping disabled people to access the countryside.

Well over a million people around the world give their books a unique BookCrossing IDentity number (BCID) before sending them out to find new readers. Since the start of the scheme in April 2001 over twelve million such books have been put into circulation. This is one of them!

Our hope is that we can track the progress of our books once they've left our hands - and that's possible if finders like you visit the website, key in the BCID and leave a comment, however long or short. It's fun, it doesn't have to cost anything, although the site always appreciates donations towards running costs, and you can remain anonymous if you wish. You don't have to join but if you do you'll be able to number and track your own books!
