I got this hardcover, minus its dust jacket, at a local Salvation Army thrift shop.

Lord Darcy is something of a Sherlock Holmes, solving crimes from simple-seeming murders to international espionage, but with a slight twist: he lives in a world in which Richard the Lionheart survived his arrow wound and created an Anglo-French empire that continues into the 20th century, with an interesting mix of technology that allows modern-day weaponry to coexist with Victorian styles and manners. In this alternate-history/fantasy world, magic is a science, so Lord Darcy employs a master sorceror to help him with his investigations; instead of requiring a chemistry lab to identify fibers found at a crime scene, he can use the law of similarity to make the fibers fabricate a shadow of the garment they came from...

The stories are interesting both as mysteries and as explorations of this alternate universe; how would science as we know it appear to a people who could use magic with the accuracy and control we expect of steam engines? Some interesting points crop up here and there about how technology can give power to anyone who can flip the switch while magic requires training (and does this justify suppressing technology for the greater good?), but for the most part the stories are about solving puzzles. If there's such a thing as "cozy fantasy/mystery stories," these would fit right in.

*** This is a book-club edition hardcover containing three "Lord Darcy" books. ["Murder and Magic" includes four stories, "Too Many Magicians" is a stand-alone novel, and "Lord Darcy Investigates" contains four stories.]

There's a TV Tropes page on the Darcy books, with some entertaining tidbits.
