Fable-like debut novel by a 20-something author, about a young doctor's search for the truth about the last days and death of her grandfather -- only it's not just about that. The basic story interweaves with two stories the grandfather has told his granddaughter over time. Her search for the truth becomes entwined with a story from her grandfather's childhood, when a tiger escaped and took up residence near his village, and the story of the deathless man he claims to have met several times in the past. Though the story is set in and unnamed country (that sounds very much like Croatia, with it's mountains and sea, and proximity to strife and war), and though much of the story deals with the horrors of war, there was a lyrical, almost poetic aspect to the telling. An author to watch, for sure.
