Joe and Joan Castleman are on route to Helsinki, Joe is thinking about the prestigious literary prize he will receive and Joan is plotting how to leave him. Their marriage has been careering towards this moment, Joe's chance to bask in the glory of a life dedicated to letters and Joan's final appearance as his adoring wife. For too long Joan has played the role of supportive wife, turning a blind eye to his misdemeanours, subjugating her own talents and quietly being the keystone of his success. THE WIFE is an acerbic and astonishing take on a marriage from its public face to the private world behind closed doors. Wolitzer has masterfully created an expose of lives lived in partnership and the truth that behind the compromises, dedication and promise inherent in marriage there so often lies a secret underpinning it all.
i was interested in reading this when the movie came out - i've not seen it yet (i belong to that group of read book first group)
and because some of the setting is helsinki, where i was born
when enough is enough would be my summary
it was a most excellent read - i think i felt like slapping joe within the early pages, and i am not a violent person
i was most certainly with joan and the rage/anger that she felt and yet was not able to (freely) express
i am not entirely sure that the finns act the way they are portrayed, but this fiction so anything goes (especially in the context of an imaginary literary award)
wolitzer's writing style is sparse and precise - with fewer words she evokes the meaning, the emotion
i did love the ending to be sure and have bought 'the interestings', a novel written 10 years after 'the wife', which has also garnered much praise
;)

So thrilled to have received this novel from my wishlist. Thankyou too for the extra goodies and I especially love the little book themed cards.
Meg Wolitzer is now on my radar and I will be searching out her backlist. A finely crafted novel exploring a marriage with the writing life central to the story. I enjoyed this so much and will now watch the film starring Glenn Close.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I loved the movie which I saw last year and this was the mighty book.
The film was close to the book. The examination of the marriage and how one wrong decision early on sets the pattern for the rest of their marriage. Collusion or abuse?
Has made me very reflective about my own failed marriage.
