Of All the Gin Joints

I got this hardcover from a local Salvation Army thrift shop. It's subtitled "Stumbling through Hollywood history," and it deals with many anecdotes about the various soused celebrities - some amusing, some inevitably tragic. From legendary tippler John Barrymore to late starter Robert Benchley to Richard Burton (who was said to be able to down three bottles of vodka a day), the book features biographies, quips and quotes, and an amazing capacity for booze.
There are nods to films about booze, too, including a look at the marvelous, harrowing classic "The Lost Weekend". And I was amused to find a recipe for the "Alaskan Polar Bear Heater," the drink concocted by the Nutty Professor's evil twin in the 1963 film starring Jerry Lewis. (This is not a drink that anyone could recommend, but it was fun seeing it in recipe form.)
