Got this softcover from a local Goodwill thrift shop, for another release copy.

The book tells the fascinating, sometimes heartbreaking story of the famous racehorse Seabiscuit, and served as the basis for the 2003 film. It also describes many of the aspects of life in America during the Depression era and the years leading up to WWII.

I admit that, when I first read the book, my only knowledge of Seabiscuit was the way his name became a shoutout in comedy routines and cartoons, whenever horse racing turned up. It is something of a comical name for a horse, and hearing it from, say, Bugs Bunny is even funnier. But after reading the book (which goes into much greater depth than the film does about all of the central characters - including the horse) I gained an appreciation for the efforts of the trainers and jockeys - and the gutsy little horse himself.

[There's a short TV Tropes page on the film and the book.]
