Beer: The Story of the Pint

I found this UK-edition softcover in this Little Free Library in Milford NH while dropping off some books of my own.
I like a nice beer, myself, though my tastes have shifted over time; I used to focus almost exclusively on porters and stouts (hello, Guinness!), while more recently I've become fond of hoppy IPAs - of which I'm spoiled for choice, with the rise in popularity of microbreweries. My town alone has three or four, and there's hardly a town of any size in New England that doesn't have a brewery or taphouse. And I have fond recollections of trips to England and Wales, with stops at local pubs and an appreciation for the house bitter...
This book goes into the history of the beverage, dispelling some common misconceptions but extolling the very long history of grain-based brews. From experiments designed to demonstrate how beer might first have been discovered (with some amusing failures along with the successes) to changes in tastes to the rise in advertising, it's an entertaining and informative look at a nice pint.
The appendices are fun too, from the "short and entirely wrong history of beer" to the glossary that ends with "zythophilia", the love of beer!
