I found this good-condition softcover in this Tardis-themed Little Free Library in Tyngsboro MA while dropping off some books of my own.

It's a really charming travel book, focusing on Baxter's life in Paris - and including a side-job as a tour guide, after he'd observed a number of by-the-book tour guides whose clients were not enjoying the experience. This is the kind of book that I stud with bits of paper, marking passages that I'd like to cite and/or places I'd like to visit - far too many bookmarks to actually use in this review! So I'll just recommend the book highly, whether you plan to visit Paris, have been there in the past, or just enjoy vicarious travel. The descriptions of meals, museums, local people, tourists, and the many fascinating sites are all beautifully written and entertaining. I especially loved the way the author could incorporate slightly scandalous or lurid tidbits into his tours, along with the "Hemingway wrote here" stuff. And there are some hilarious personal anecdotes as well, such as the time he got locked out of his own apartment on the brink of a holiday visit, when nearly all the city's shops were closed...

Very enjoyable read; recommended!
