I read this in elementary school, of course, and it made an impression on me: I liked that it explored darker subjects than most of our assigned reading. When I tried reading it again as an adult, I didn't enjoy it as much. In trying to create a sense of disorder, Golding used a writing style (especially for dialogue) that was fragmented and is a bit exhausting to try to follow. I don't remember this from the first time, so I suspect my elementary-school teacher was expert at helping us decipher what was happening!
