Sarong Party Girls: A Novel

This was a pretty good book. I gave it only an average rating as it took me a bit to get into the story. I don't usually read this type of Chic Fic. However, it took me into a world not familiar to me and that was interesting. This book opens up the world of nightclubbing in Singapore where the main character, Jazzy, and her girlfriends are looking to hook up with rich "ang mohs" (light skinned foreigners) with hopes of finding a husband. I found Jazzy a bit shallow and wasn't fond of her character but as the book progressed, she grew on me. The author wrote in Singlish which had me referring to a online Singlish dictionary, until I got the hang of it. I thought this was a good move, on the author's part, as it made the story more real to the reader. The story starts out all light and fun, girls partying all night with their guy friends. Towards the end, it gets a bit darker as the glamour and excitement of bright lights, loud music and dating fades. I would recommend this book to my gal pals with encouragement to keep reading to get past the light, fluffy part.
I am putting this book into AlterEgoZoe's Asian Themed Bookbox. Happy Travels!

Received this in the Asian themed book box. Looking forward to it!
This is a terrific book. I didn't realize how much I DIDN'T know about Singapore. At the beginning, I thought I wouldn't be able to follow the text in Singlish, but after a little while, I was reading it fluently and appreciating the nuances of humor and emotion. At the beginning, I thought this would be simplistic "chick lit", but it isn't at all, to my way of thinking. Instead, a good meditation on how we deal with the limitations our society (attempts) to put on us.
given to a friend.
