I got this hardcover from the books-by-the-pound sale at a local Goodwill thrift shop. It's a harrowing account of the gruesome fates of young US pilots on Chichijima, an island about 150 miles north of Iwo Jima, after being captured by the Japanese during WWII. The book goes into the culture and history of Japan as background, and includes looks at the propaganda of both sides - and it doesn't stint on descriptions of the more destructive Allied actions as experienced by the Japanese. The testimony of the men who witnessed the treatment of the Allied pilots indicates that many of them were as young and naive as their enemies were...

I left this book in the Little Free Library on this bright, chilly day; hope someone enjoys it!
