amazon review:
Many years ago, Iris Greenfeder's mother disappeared. They were living at Hotel Equinox where Iris's father was the manager and where her mother wrote delicate, powerful fantasies. Then one day, she took a train and never returned. She was found dead in a hotel fire in Brooklyn, registered as another man's wife.
Returning to Hotel Equinox, Iris needs to find the truth about her mother; there are some clues in her writing, and others in the memories of those who knew her. Kay Greenfeder, it seems, was a women without a past. But as Iris begins to untangle the secrets of years before, she realises that the past was very different to what she had believed, and much more dangerous...
___________
The book started off well but I found the main character pathetic and the story developed too slowly. The fantasy bits at the beginning of each chapter were boring and the "real-life" references to Kay's life seemed very fabricated. I've read three books by Carol Goodman so far and this has been the weakest.
Maybe someone else will enjoy it more.

My second book by Carol Goodman, the first one being "The drowning tree".
And I must say, it'll be my last. Her way of writing isn't just mine..
Her books always start so slow, dragging along, only in the middle they pick up speed and suspense.
I do like selkie stories but I didn't read the bits and pieces of the Selkie Story told at the beginning of each chapter. It didn't seem necessary.
I did like the story better than the Drowning Tree one, though. But I had the same problem with the male characters. I didn't like Aiden, I liked Jack much better.
These books are very detailed, lots of information, a bit tiring to read - so I was on the verge of stopping quite often..

This has arrived safely in the Swiss Alps where it might have to idle a bit behind some other books which need to be read first. Thanks so much for making this available and for sending.

Although I would hardly describe this as a favorite or amazing book, I did enjoy this and was dizzied enough by the various twists and turns of the plot(s) to be relatively surprised by the end. The relativity is because there are so many possible culprits, that of course the actual one had been held up for examination and considered as well, without any of the options ever being fully discarded.
I enjoyed the settings of the book - between NYC and the Hudson area, as I mentioned when commenting on The Drowning Tree, I found myself reading about familiar territory. I found the variety of characters intriguing and basically found it an entertaining whodunnit with a story within a story theme.
I see I appreciated this more than a number of other readers -this is here as a bookcrossing ring so will travel on to the UK after me. I will probably wait to post it from France where I'll be in a little over ten days.

This was hand-carried (ok, driven) from Switzerland to France, and now leaves for the UK. Thanks for making this available. Enjoy!

It arrived safely in the UK just as the snow had melted -one whole day of the beautiful white stuff ! ;-)
I'm still reading the first book and will need to read something in between so this book will linger a while with me.

Whilst it was an interesting story there wasn't enough thrill for me. The final few chapters unveiling the culprit kept my attention though :-)
