This was an interesting one. It's a tale of a young boy making his way from Sri Lanka to the UK by boat in the 1950s. I really liked parts of the book, eg the tale of the storm . It was amazing to think of how the treatment of children has changed. I can't imagine anyone allowing their children to have this kind of almost totally unsupervised journey now. Some bits of the book were a bit slow, but on the whole I enjoyed reading it
Picked up at meetup, thank you!
This was a nice tale, though, not Ondaartje's best I think. Like Bookfrogster, I was amazed by the lack of adult supervision! Definitely a different era.
The beginning and end sections were pretty gripping , but it meandered a bit too much for my liking in the middle. Somehow the whole story didn't hang together as cohesively as I suspect the author intended. But on the whole it was an entertaining read. I did enjoy the main character's enthusiastic exploits.
