1999 Winner of the Miles Franklin Award and the Commonwealth Writers Prize. On a property in western New South Wales a man named Holland lives with his daughter Ellen. Over the years, as she grows into a beautiful young woman, he plants hundreds of different gum trees on his land. When Ellen is nineteen her father announces his decision- she will marry the man who can name all his species of eucalyptus, down to the last tree... Eucalyptus is a modern fairy tale and an unpredictable love story. Haunting and mesmeric, it illuminates the nature of story-telling itself.

Given up on page 112. I was hoping it would get better but it just felt like a book about Eucalyptus trees with what felt like sexist banter. Ugh, not for me. Over on GoodReads people seem to give it either 1 star or 5, so a book that you either love or hate. I tried!

Thank you Edwardstreet for this Wishlist tag. I look forward to reading it. Gratefully received alongside 2 other tags.
I’ve heard that this novel should be read before reading Helen Garner’s memoirs if one is to give it a fair go. I love Garner, does that mean I’ll hate Bail? It seems it’s a pretty polarising novel. My TBR pile is immense, but I’ll get to this one sooner or later.
