welcome to bookcrossing, enjoy your new free book.
In his books, Elmore Leonard always introduces you to the inside, the experience, of a place or culture that you are not likely to know. His lead characters have the skills, the intelligence and a certain kind of inner-directed level headedness that help them thrive in situations that are nearly impossible. In previous books of his that I have read, the world can be Detroit in the crisis of World War II, the Mississippi River barges, Hollywood, Oklahoma during the Great Depression (among its bank robbers.). I'd guess that this one is mainly among those being released from prison, and the decisions that they make about choosing crime or legitimate work, and what it means that most of the people you know are criminals or marginally-criminal people of some sort. Like all his books, you come away with a strong sense of who each character is, they make a lot of sense and seem very well-rounded. The story also zips along at a more or less breakneck pace, which makes the book compulsively readable.
I recommend it, because he's a terrific writer. However, this book may not show you how he is perhaps one of the best writers in America in the 20th century. A blurb on the book asserts that, and I have asserted it since about the third of his books that I read. A few writers I know take him as their model for (attempting) good writing, and he really is extraordinary, in his own stripped-down way.
Hope you enjoy this book. If you don't know about Bookcrossing, it's a way to get a conversation going about the books you read, with people all over the country and even all over the world. It's also a way to see where your books have been, and where they travel to. It's entirely anonymous and a lot of fun, and can be a way to get lots more books for free, if you use the "Go hunting" tab on the website. Either way, enjoy your new book, it's a gift to you!
