Thank you for my lovely birthday book. I've been wanting to read this for ages and then saw the excellent TV adaptation, so can't wait to get stuck in.

I watched the TV adaptation of this book and so the idea of the two cities living side by side in the same space wasn't a surprise, but it obviously didn't make that much if an impression as I couldn't remember much about the murder mystery itself, so I could approach the book as a new story.

It's definitely an intriguing premise and it does make for some added problems for the investigators. Like always, Mieville doesn't always make it easy to follow exactly what is going on and why, but that sense of oddness helps to make the story. Working out how and why the girl was killed, and in which 'city' it all takes place, sends Borlu onto a hunt that leads to the bit between, to Breach and beyond.

I enjoyed the challenge of reading this and became fascinated by this world. It would have been great to find out why the split happened and whether there was something more like our world before, but as it doesn't have an impact on the story then it doesn't actually matter.

A weird and wonderful read.
