Although this is billed as being the first in a series featuring Karen Pirie, she is a relatively minor character compared with some of the others, and it could easily be taken as a standalone novel.

In 1978, a young woman is found murdered and there are no suspects other than the four unfortunate students who found her body. 25 years later, the case is reopened and the four men start to be targeted by someone who is apparently out for revenge.

Val McDermid can do this sort of thing in her sleep now, but the number of red herrings and the slow revelation of extra detail is skilfully done and it keeps it interesting. The period detail from 1978 is nicely handled although I thought some of the language may have been anachronistic (did people talk about homophobia or being 'outed' back then?). As ever, there's a satisfying conclusion that wrong-foots you if you haven't been paying attention.
