This was delivered to my daughter's in London, a year ago. I think it was a mooch, but I don't actually remember.
When I finished reading this, I was surprised not to see the author Tan Twan Eng mentioned as one of the important writers writing about Malaya... but then I saw this was written before the two books by Eng that I'm familiar with and so greatly appreciated.
This book has an interesting structure, with an almost Rashomon effect of three different people telling a story from their own perspective - the first by someone who did not actually witness any of it. A great deal -almost too much, in my opinion, remains left between the lines, but I was nonetheless caught up in the story and the mood. As I spent part of my youth in the tropics, I could relate to a great deal in terms of the setting and feel of the place and people, and felt it was well-rendered. I enjoyed this book, and the writing, but just as the story, told in the way it was, is incomplete and somewhat skewed, I felt the book as a whole was somehow not quite rounded off. In some ways this is fine, too.
I read this while visiting family.

I am leaving this with family living near Oaxaca, and after reading they may leave it at a library in the city. Enjoy!
