"Despite their differences, sisters Vianne and Isabelle have always been close. Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris while Vianne is content with life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. But when the Second World War strikes, Antoine is sent off to fight and Vianne finds herself isolated so Isabelle is sent by their father to help her.
As the war progresses, the sisters' relationship and strength is tested. With life changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Vianne and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions."
This was an okayish kind of read, not a bad story, although it has been done before I think. My main problem with the book was the cĺiched characters and the historical inaccuracies. We have the beautiful, young girl who joins the Resistance, the nasty, brutish SS officer and the main character has a best friend who just happens to be Jewish!
At one point the main character's child is ill and she goes looking for antibiotics for her. Well the only antibiotic at that time was penicillin and it certainly wasn't available to the general public.
Despite all this I kept going and even quite enjoyed the ending. I don't think I will bother reading another Kristin Hannah book though.
