Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans

I know that a lot of chicklit is superficial. But this book was maybe a bit over the top. Not just the endless references to looks and appearance, but also the many times that the author makes a very sexistic statement. Sentences like “he wouldn’t notice such details, since he is a man” just get on my nerves.
It’s an ugly duckling story, so when overweight Jemima Jones loses a few pounds, her life suddenly gets all better, because apparently looks are all that matter in life. Needless to say that there really was way too much focus on body weight issues and I think the book promotes a very unhealthy lifestyle.
Some parts were a bit funny, there’s a love story that is hugely predictable but entertaining and I liked the references to early days of the internet (I had a bit of a discussion with someone. Jemima gives her “mobile number” to someone. But chronologically I think that mobile phones became a thing when internet was already quite established. But the author only refers to that mobile phone once).. I finished the book in 2 days, so it wasn’t that bad. I really wanted to know what was gonna happen to Jemima, Brad and Ben (even though it was very predictable).

Funny thing happened to me on the plane. The woman next to me was reading a book I also read recently and that is in a more serious category of literature. I could see that she was struggling to focus on the story and I know I had the same feeling when I read that book. I wanted to say something, but I was holding my Jemima J book, and somehow I felt that holding that book diminished all credibility on my opinion about her book.
