I've just finished the novel and it wasn't at all what I expected! I'm at a loss to give a review without revealing any spoilers so I'll just say that it started off well but midway it started to baffle me!
I'll package it up soon and send it to the next in the bookray.
Thanks for your patience everyone.

Thank you Jotka for sending the book along with a beautiful window decoration (?) showing artwork from your hometown. Thank you Trojanhorse for buying a replacement copy to keep the bookray going and Femke85 for starting the ray. I love finding the origami hidden in the book.

The bookray book reached me today, just ahead of a snowstorm. Love the little origami birds tucked inside! Will read it and get it moving along soon.

I enjoyed this one! It's a delightfully quirky tale with aspects of steampunk (Mori's wonderful devices, especially little Katsu the octopus), magical realism (Mori's precognition), and some will-they-or-won't-they relationship tangles - which, I was delighted to find, came out the way I'd hoped by the end of the book! The author has fun with the see-the-future tropes, including inflicting poor Mori with a memory that alters depending on which future possibility winds up coming true; if he foresaw a path in which he knew a piece of music, for example, he "knows" it now, but if that path does not happen then he'll have forgotten it. Yeah, makes his relationships with others a bit problematic - poor Thaniel!

Very lively and entertaining!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the book, with some entertaining tidbits.]

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I didn't know what to expect from this book. After reading it, I can say it's not really my cup of tea, even though I usually like victorian literature. The characters are interesting, but I thought the whole plot took too long to set in place, for a result that fizzles out at the end. Anyway, it was worth a try. Thanks Trojanhorse for offering this read.
I mailed the book today to CanticleLost, last on this bookray.
Happy reading!
