After recently streaming the 1997 film SWEPT FROM THE SEA, I decided to order this single short story, also from Amazon. I stuck with the film for its Cornish setting and its connection to Conrad. Sadly, I found the movie treatment boring, despite the presence of Vincent Perez who is usually very compelling to watch. Rachel Weisz is a really intelligent actress but I have a hard time with her because she physically resembles someone who hurt my family years ago. Anyway, I decided that I wanted to read the short story. I will wait for awhile to read it. The film was beautiful, gorgeously filmed and directed by Beeban Kidron, but I want it to wash away from my consciousness before reading the story. This book is in large print format. I will probably find that a bit difficult to negotiate.

The short story was starker and sadder than the movie. I understand how this tragic tale could inspire the cinematic imagination with its mythic sense of the sea and of foreigness. Conrad of course was Polish, though he became an English writer. There was a part of him that must have died in order to accomplish this. Yanko and Kennedy are more important here than Amy Foster. The gold of her golden heart trusted then faltered in trust. This story is most about the failure to trust in love. It's a startling fable that the movie failed to interpret.
