I found this handsome hardcover at Toadstool Books in Milford NH. It's a collection of recent ghost stories from a variety of authors, including some of my favorites. The premise is delightful: each story is inspired by some aspect of an English Heritage building, many of which have their own haunted histories, but the authors were free to take an idea and run with it!

I enjoyed the entire collection, with special mention to Sarah Perry's chilling "They Flee From Me That Sometime Did Seek," with its nod to the horrors of ostracism; Mark Haddon's "The Bunker," taking an actual Cold War bunker and suggesting the worst possible outcome; Kate Clanchy's "The Wall," in which ghosts of the past help heal the bitter wounds of a family; and Jeanette Winterson's "As Strong as Death," with a modern-day couple's wedding evoking the ghosts of much-tried lovers of the past.

The book also contains an afterword explaining how the properties inspired ghost stories, and a "gazetteer of English Heritage hauntings," including the eight locations used by the authors as well as many more.

I left this book in this charmingly decorated Little Free Library. Hope someone enjoys it!
