I found this good-condition hardcover on the ongoing book-sale shelves at the Milford NH library. The series features Maisie Dobbs, a clever young woman who has, it seems, an excellent deductive mind as well as some kind of psychic talent (though this is mainly suggested here by a tingling at the back of her neck). She's versed in psychology as well as in detective skills, and has a small consulting practice where she attempts to not only solve the clients' mysteries for them but also to bring all the parties to some kind of resolution.
The first book opened in 1929, and most of the series has dealt with the aftermath of the first World War, including personal trauma to Maisie and many of her friends. By this point - the 14th book, I think - enough time has passed that Maisie must trade her lingering scars from WWI for the onset of WWII, quite a transition...
While the story is set at the dawn of the next war and is very much affected by the growing awareness of how this will touch the lives of the main characters, the mystery plot has to do with a series of killings motivated by deeds from the previous war. Maisie unravels things with the help of her reliable Billy, and at the end of the story follows her custom of seeking some kind of closure for the victims and survivors - including locating burial sites, something of a running theme in the series...
