I found this paperback on the book-sale shelves at the Milford NH public library, and was delighted - it's the 4th in the fantasy/police-procedural "Rivers of London" series, of which I've enjoyed a couple of other books and several graphic-novel stories.

This one occurs after a confrontation with the Faceless Man - a powerful magic-wielder with obscure motives - left protagonist-and-narrator Peter Grant's partner Lesley with a hideously disfigured face. She's recovering from the initial trauma, but it seems that surgery can't repair the damage, and she wears masks at work now. She and Peter investigate a series of unusual deaths and wind up going undercover as a couple seeking cheap housing at a semi-derelict housing estate. The building has a complement of unusual tenants, including a dryad living in the well-hidden wooded courtyard. And someone seems to have altered the structure to create a kind of magical battery, but... for what purpose?

Lots and lots of marvelous banter, as Peter's a master at snarking and Lesley's his match. (Their boss and mentor Thomas Nightingale is pretty good too, though he specializes in VERY dry humor. And badassery of an amazing kind; his confrontation with the Russian Night Witch is spectacular!)

The story has lots of twists and turns, with appearances by the river gods and goddesses, other types of fey, and some heinous villains. And there's a shocking swerve near the end that changes everything for our heroes...

Vastly entertaining series, this!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits.]
