I ordered this slightly-battered paperback from an online seller to have another release copy of this marvelous novel. (It has been reissued more recently - and there's a new edition due in 2019 - but this one was cheaper {wry grin}.)

Heyer's Regency romances are lively, witty, and full of lush period detail - and usually include two, three, or even four romances, which Heyer juggles deftly. Cotillion is my favorite, largely because for a change the hero ISN'T a deadly duellist, dour Duke, brooding bad-boy, or rake; instead, he is possessed of skills that are much more to the point in fashionable London society, even if they don't seem especially dashing. [I trust that's not too much of a spoiler; it's usually fairly obvious who's supposed to wind up with whom in these stories, although the paths they take to get there are often surprising!] The dialog sparkles, all the characters are great fun, there are delightful conversational fencing matches, some rather madcap schemes, and a vastly satisfactory conclusion. Love this one! [There's a lovely unabridged audiobook version of the novel, narrated by Phyllida Nash.]

I'm offering this book for a bookray. The book weighs about 6 ounces, something to keep in mind when estimating postage costs. [US participants can get postage estimates at the USPS site here.]

Bookray instructions:

When you receive the books, please journal them, and PM the next person in line for their address so you'll have it ready when you've finished the books.

Note: even if you've sent books to that person before, please PM them before mailing this one, to confirm that the address is correct and that they're able to take on a bookray book at this time.

Try and read the book promptly - ideally, within a month of receiving it. (If you expect to take longer, you can request to be put at the end of the list. If you find you're swamped with other books when the person before you contacts you about the book, you can ask to be skipped, and then let me know whether you'd like to be moved down the list or dropped entirely. If you receive the book and find that it's taking longer than you'd planned to get through it, I'd appreciate an update in the journal entry or in the forum thread, just to let me and the other participants know you haven't forgotten it.)

When you're ready to pass the book along, please add your comments and indicate where you're sending it. If you find that you're having problems contacting the next person in line, or don't think you can manage to mail the book as originally agreed, please let me know; I'll be glad to try to work something out.

I'm sending this to BCer Carlienka in Germany to kick off the bookray. Enjoy!

*** Released for the 2018 E-less release challenge. ***

Received today! Thank you GoryDetails!

Just lovely! It took my brain a little while to adjust to the language but once I was in, it was great. I love the character of Freddy... and couldn't be more pleased with how all the loose ends are neatly tied up. A lovely feel-good Regency read.

and here it is!
thank you carlienka - and also for the lovely postcard..

Edit to say, that I started reading now - Feb. 25th.. sorry it took me such a long time but the book before was quite time-consuming :-/

Journal Entry 8 by kiki66 at Gauting, Bayern Germany on Friday, March 8, 2019
Finished this one finally. Unfortunately I skipped some pages because it just wasn't my thing. I read quite a few Heyer's and find them often a bit hard to read. So many descriptions/thoughts and lesser action. Maybe it is also the print - too narrow for my taste. Or I am spoiled by Julia Quinn's novels..
but thanks anyway for letting me participate!

Will send it on as soon as I have JudySlump612's address!

Edit: sent on Monday, 18th.. I am not sure how long it'll take - we have new postage prices and this is an experiment now :-/

Arrived safely today - and kiki66, nine days from Germany seems pretty good. Thank you all for passing on a book that looks like pure fun!

Journal Entry 10 by JudySlump612 at Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Thursday, April 25, 2019
Well, this was pure fun! I love reading about this time period, and Heyer does about the best research I've ever seen, especially about that footloose Hanover royal family. I agree with GoryDetails and Carlienka about the neat and satisfying conclusions, not all of which I foresaw.

To my amazement, DH (DrSlump612) absolutely LOVED this. He'd be reading in bed while I was at the living room computer, and I kept hearing bursts of chortling and outright laughter. Then he started googling for more details, such as the different kinds of wheeled conveyances the characters were using. What people rode in showed their social and economic status, just as much as vehicle choices do today of course.

Now he's on a Heyer book binge. Luckily our library has a generous supply, and of course I enjoy reading them too. But- he likes Georgette Heyer better than Jane Austen!! This is just so wrong I don't even know how to start the conversation. Oh well, at least I'll never have to worry about him borrowing my Austen collection when I feel the sudden need to reread a passage.

Well, I wasn't sure I was going to like this one much when I first started. The language is a bit dense, & it was a bit slow going for a while. But I'm glad I persisted. I found I liked this quite a bit by the end, which I thoroughly anticipated & approved of.

Thanks for sharing!
