I got this softcover from the by-the-pound room at the Hudson Goodwill, for another release copy.

It's narrated by a dog who's "a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs)"... His master is a rising star on the race-car circuit, which adds another unusual element to the mix.

From the opening, with the very old dog-narrator describing his uncomfortable wait for his master's return, it's clear this is going to be a book that requires having a box of tissues handy - but while there are some very sad bits, overall it's a hopeful story. There's humor and charm here, and for those of us who have loved pets in our time there are some heartwarming - and heartbreaking bits too...

Whether the dog is explaining his theory that dogs are in fact man's closest relatives, or describing the way his man's woman tries to work her way into his heart, or giving the first hints of something tragically wrong and which he cannot warn his master about, the story's involving and bittersweet.
