Inspector Montalbano has had a car accident: he was in a hurry to go to a funeral (the wife of one of his most respected mentors has recently passed away). They almost crash onto an ugly green Twingo, which they realised it had been abandoned. Nobody was injured, so they keepn on driving to get in time. When they get to the village, Montalbano realised that he is attending the WRONG funeral. When he arrives to the right one, it has already finished two hours ago.

On their slow deflated way back, the green car is still there - they had left their telephone number, but nobody has phoned to claim on the insurance money for the repairals. There is a house by the side of the road, on which land the car is left. Montalbano goes to check it out, and he finds a naked murdered lady. Back in his Viagatá, he asks a friend of his to make an anonymous caller. When she complies, he is on the case.
