This book starts its journey with BookCrossing from Delphi, Greece
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
" 1891. Seventeen-year-old Leonie Vernier and her brother abandon Paris for the sanctuary of their aunt's isolated country house near Carcassonne, the Domaine de la Cade. But in the nearby woods, Leonie stumbles across a ruined sepulchre - and a timeless mystery whose traces are written in blood.
2007. Meredith Martin arrives at the Domaine de la Cade as part of her research for a biography she's writing. But Meredith is also seeking the key to her own complex legacy and soon becomes immersed in the story of a tragic love, a missing girl, a unique deck of tarot cards, an unquiet soul and the strange events of one cataclysmic night more than a century ago... This is a well-travelled book already, before starting its BookCrossing life!
I found this book more than 10 years ago in Paleros, west mainland Greece, in a resort hotel I used to work in... Possibly it came from UK, where most of our guests and staff originated from. It then followed me from Paleros to Delphi and had a long break...The book seems well-read by many people and it's in a somehow "tired" condition, but still in decent shape and ready to meet new readers : )
I can't remember if I've read it myself or not, but it has been sitting on my shelves for ages and I think it's time to send it travelling again...
Herbert's latest novel begins as a rather taut political thriller/horror hybrid, but it begins to deteriorate about halfway through, becoming increasingly poorly paced and confused. The story concerns Liam Holloran, a mercenary and the veteran of many violent encounters, who is hired as a bodyguard for Fritz Kline, a psychic who has become aware that his life is threatened but doesn't know by whom. Kline's psychic abilities, it is eventually revealed, are partly the result of an alliance he made long ago with Bel-Marduk, a Sumerian deity who also shows up in Christian theology as the Fallen Angel, Lucifer. Kline and his cohorts are a grisly but one-dimensional lot and Herbert doesn't have very much of a story for them to show off in. The author increasingly relies on repulsive detail in lieu of solid plotting and character development. After the intriguing beginning, a disappointment.
In 1891, Leonie Vernier is a young girl living in Paris until an invitation from her uncle's widow Isolde prompts a journey to the Carcassonne region with her brother, Anatole. Unknown to Leonie, her brother had been having an affair with Isolde and is being pursued by her jealous former lover, Victor Constant. For a while, they live an idyllic lifestyle in the country. However, Constant discovers where they are staying and sets out to exact his revenge.
In the present day, an American, Meredith Martin, is in France to research the life of Claude Debussy for a biography she is writing. She is also trying to find out more about her biological mother. During the visit, she uncovers information that links her lineage to that of Léonie Vernier and discovers the truth about the events in Carcassonne during that period in history.
Most of the action takes place in the Domaine de la Cade, a stately home in Rennes-les-Bains, which in 1891 is owned by Leonie's deceased uncle Jules and his wife Isolde, whom Anatole later marries. The house in Meredith's timeline has been repurposed as an upmarket hotel.
There are also parts of the book that are situated in Paris at the same time, as well as parts in towns and villages neighbouring Carcassonne.
The story features heavy reference to the occult and tarot readings, and the stories of Leonie and Meredith are brought together by a series of visions that are related to the tarot and a small church, known as a Sepulchre, in the grounds of the Domaine de la Cade.
Several of the major characters in Mosse's novel Labyrinth make cameo appearances in Sepulchre.
Και μιά περίληψη στα Ελληνικά ' Το πέτρινο μαυσωλείο κρύβει μια τράπουλα Ταρώ με εξουσία ζωής και θανάτου. Φιγούρες, μουσικές νότες, λατινικοί χαρακτήρες, τα πνεύματα των χαρτιών: μια μυστική παρτιτούρα-δίοδος ανάμεσα σε δύο κόσμους. Πολλοί πίστεψαν ότι πρόκειται για χάρτη θησαυρού. Μέσα στους αιώνες, το μυστικό της τράπουλας θα παρασύρει όλους αυτούς που προσπάθησαν να το ανακαλύψουν. Οι φιγούρες απεικονίζουν αληθινά πρόσωπα. Και η ιστορία τους γράφτηκε με αίμα....
Thanks for the surprise gift. I have been reading "Labyrinthe" last summer (http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/14826500/) and I intend to read this one quickly while I still remember the first part of this trilogy.
