I saw this author speak at our Bookcrossing convention in Melbourne in 2014. Found this book on the Bowls Club bookshelf, so took it away to register and read.
I have my reading mojo back - read this over a 24 hour period! I really liked the way the book jumped from character to character but did find it difficult to keep up. The chapters on each family member were not very long but it often took me nearly the whole chapter to work out where that member fitted in.
I can imagine how life would have been for this family, lucky enough to own their home In working class Richmond but torn asunder when the breadwinning father meets his early and shameful demise (falling off the back of a team whilst drunk). The story of Connie was sad and quite believable.

Nine days is about one family spanning seventy years, from 1939 until present day. Kip Westaway has had to leave school and get a job to help support his family after his Father’s Day. His twin Francis remains at school, and his sister Connie has had to leave Art School and get a job. We hear from Kip’s daughters and grandson, as well as his mother and sister about their lives living in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond. An enjoyable read, although I did get a bit confused when each chapter moved to a different character working out which time we were in.
