** Spoiler alert ** Read after you've read it, maybe?

It’s *slightly* more complex than a lot of Jenny Colgan’s other books, which isn’t really saying a lot to be truthful, but has a few storylines to get your teeth into.

The recent books have still got very similar themes though and it would be very good to see her break away from:

Girl needs fresh start
Begins a new career
Meets a man with issues, or whom needs time and space alone
She finds she doesn’t want to life without him, but might have to
Grits her teeth and concentrates on the new business (usually food or confectionary, tho books have featured)
THE big romantic scene of declaration, passionate love-making and hair fanned out on a pillow, in a bath etc etc

Baby on the way - how will he react?!?! (Xmas book blurb spoiler - sorry!)

This is so similar to the Beach Street Bakery books, even down to the guys being American.

There were far too many descriptions of Flora’s skin and hair again. Argot too. Oh yes. Poor little Argot is still at a very young toddler level of speech while the traumatised Syrian boys can not only understand, but speak English by the end. This is so unrealistic as children with EAL are often streets ahead with language acquisition. If the boys, why not Argot? But she did made me laugh as she’s a fun character.

Flora is lacking - she’s a one dimensional character. There is something about her in the first book, whereas here she’s just about to go into a tantrum at the drop of a hat. She just doesn’t seem fully adult for a 32 year old, someone who has lived away in London and held a responsible job. There’s something missing really.
There is definitely an attempt at drawing an independent woman in the characterisation: ‘I don’t need rescuing’ but as usual this is rather half hearted.

Having said all this I have to state that it’s pretty good Holiday Reading. I really got into the story; so much so that as I walked some of the SW coast path, in Cornwall today, I was wondering how it would go as I only had a bit left to read before the end.
